This English Reference Bible, edited and originally published by the American Bible Society, contains important helps which are called to the attention of the reader so that their significance and manner of use may be more fully understood. The text itself is made more readable and intelligible by some modernization of spelling, greater consistency in the forms of proper names (especially of Old Testament persons referred to in the New Testament), appropriate indentation for poetic portions, paragraphing and section headings to set off relevant divisions of the text, a handy reference system, and certain marginal readings which are helpful in understanding the text. A special appendix to this volume contains two very useful sections. In one, a number of alternative readings and renderings are listed in Biblical order, and for each of these there is an asterisk (*) in the corresponding portion of the text. In the other, most of the archaic and obsolete words of the King James Version are given in alphabetical order, with an indication of those passages in which the changed meanings of the words in question arc likely to constitute obstacles to proper understanding. Some copies of this Reference Bible are also supplied with a 45 000-line concordance, which has been develop to supplement the reference system and to provide a ready guide to those passages which the average reader is likely to want to find. While carefully avoiding any interpretive notes or comments, these helps do, however, provide the thoughtful reader and student with some of the basic helps which are needed for adequate comprehension and appreciation of the message of the Holy Bible.
